1960s Turquoise Bath to Handmade-Look White

White handmade-look tile bathroom with a black towel warmer and a patterned shower

The space

A bathroom untouched since the house was built: turquoise tile on every wall, a sliding glass tub door, a vanity from the same decade. Nothing leaked yet. Everything was about to.

The decision

Strip it to the framing and start from the waterproofing. The owners wanted texture rather than pattern on the big walls, so the handmade-look white tile does the work everywhere except the shower, which gets the one bold surface in the room behind glass. Black fixtures and a towel warmer keep it from reading as a white box.

The detail

The wall-mounted faucets. Each one comes through the tile at exactly one grout line, on both sinks, so the two escutcheons sit symmetrical to the millimetre — which is only possible if the layout was planned before the rough-in.

Before / After

Drag the line

Same spot, same phone. The only thing that changed is the work.
