White Subway, Black Barn-Door Glass

White subway tile shower with a black-framed sliding glass door and black fixtures

The space

A leak into the kitchen ceiling below. The old shower had tile straight on drywall with nothing between.

The decision

New backer, then a liquid membrane rolled over walls, curb and corners until the whole enclosure is one red skin, and a flood test before tile. Subway with a dark grout and a black door, because the owners wanted it to look like it had always been there.

The detail

Levelling clips on every course of subway tile. It is slower, and it is the reason the grout lines are straight from floor to ceiling on a wall that was not.

Waterproofed / Finished

Drag the line

Same spot, same phone. The only thing that changed is the work.

The red is the membrane. It covers every inch of the enclosure before the first tile — this is the photo you never get to see. Shower walls and curb coated in red liquid waterproofing membrane. The finished white subway shower with a black-framed sliding door.
